biography

IN THE BEGINNING
Spoonfeedas began their musical journey in the year 2000 when four neighborhood friends namely Peter Guthrie, John Reardon, Colin Browne, and Elton Besson decided to put a rock band together. A few short weeks later, they entered a small recording studio not far from home and recorded their first three songs. The demo was sent in to 5FM and began getting regular daytime airplay. One of the tracks was selected over 300 other submissions to feature on a compilation album of the top South African unsigned bands and the track ‘King With A Crown’ was an instant success, climbing to number 7 on the Top 40. They were chosen to appear in an evening slot on the main stage at one of the country’s biggest music festivals and performed for their first crowd of over 8000 people, only four months after their inception.

THE FIRST ALBUM
Spoonfeedas promptly entered the same studio to record a full album of 11 original compositions. Financing it themselves, they were given a tight deadline to record their songs and did so with proficiency usually seen only in seasoned studio musicians. The band obtained their first number 1 single off their debut album ‘True North’ which also spawned no less than six more singles over the following three years and marked the bands certain arrival on to the music scene. The album was named ‘CD Of The Month’ in FHM magazine and attracted various sponsorships as well as a full endorsement by Yamaha SA, who sponsored the band all new instruments and a sound rig. Spoonfeedas were now being recognised as master songwriters in their genre and they started drawing more and more people to their live shows. As they embarked on several tours around the country, they also started to attract various record labels and managers.

THE FIRST RECORD DEAL
For the next album, they signed up to an enthusiastic independent label and promptly entered the recording studio. The result was the second album entitled ‘Falling Higher’. The follow up to the band’s debut was met with open arms by the public and spawned the number 1 hit singles ‘So I Wait’ and the title track ‘Falling Higher’.

THE PRESENT
Moving forward to the year 2009, Spoonfeedas have an impressive list of achievements under their belt. Most notably, they have played alongside acts such as Collective Soul, Metallica, Simple Plan and The Rasmus as well as opening for Ronan Keating on his South African tour. More recently they were invited to perform at the Dubai Desert Rock festival in support of Muse and Velvet Revolver. 2008 has also seen Spoonfeedas sign some fairly lucrative publishing deals with brands such as Radox, Yamaha and M-Net Supersport to write and produce soundtracks for their television adverts and sports programmes, based on their constant radio presence.

THE FUTURE
SpoonFeedas is now recognised as one of the hardest working bands in the country by touring relentlessly and continously writing and recording new songs. The band is made up of 4 level headed guys hungry for the next step in their musical careers, they hold the rights to all their music and publishing, and are positive about the future. They are in the final stages of recording their third album in their own recording studio and are currently on the hunt for international representation.
